This stately hotel with restaurant and a big flower garden is set on lovely grounds on the edge of Opatija directly by the sea.
Dating back to the final years of the 19th century and reconstructed along classical lines by renowned Viennese architect Carl Siedl in 1924, Villa Ariston has welcomed a constant stream of royalty, leaders of men and arbiters of taste over its life, including various Habsburgs, assorted Kennedys and Coco Chanel. The level of service has remained reassuringly old fashioned and the hotel continues to be a venue of choice in Opatija, if not the entire region, for exclusive weddings, cocktail parties and business meetings.
A red carpet lines the stone steps leading up to the first floor, past an original 17th century old master. A rather grand dark wooden balustraded landings runs the length of the villa and there is a suite and a junior suite on this floor. The remaining guest rooms are located on the second floor in the eaves. The supremely comfortable rooms are equipped with all modern conveniences including air-conditioning, satellite TV and a hairdryer in the smart, tiled bathroom.
Breakfast can be taken on the terrace along with the restful views of the Gulf of Kvarner though the tall cypress and pine trees. The 13-kilometre-long stretch of promenade passes by the base of the grounds and there is even a small swimming platform on the rocks below. Keen strollers can wander along to the centre of Opatija past the resort's marina, a 15-20-minute walk away, or along Icici and Lovran in the opposite direction. Set just down from the coastal road on the very edge of Opatija, the hotel has its own car park.
